IMPROVING HIGHWAY 16 NEAR PAYNTON

Released on August 8, 2001

Resurfacing is now underway on a 12.1 km section of Highway 16 northwest of

Paynton.

"Work for this nearly $1.4 million resurfacing project began August 2nd and

should be finished by the end of August," Highways and Transportation

Minister Pat Atkinson said. "This project will create around 24 full-time

jobs."

The Highway 16 resurfacing project is occurring on two separate sections.

The first 3.5 km section begins 4 km northwest of Paynton and continues

northwest. The second section begins over 15 km northwest of Paynton and

continues for 8.6 km.

"It's essential to keep our provincial sections of the National Highway

System in good condition," Atkinson said. "By strengthening and surfacing

this section, Highway 16 between Paynton and Maidstone will be capable of

handling heavier traffic loads and volumes."

H.J.R. Asphalt Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded this resurfacing project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that

carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
