IMPROVEMENTS TO HIGHWAY 1 NEAR CHAPLIN

Released on August 8, 2001

Surfacing improvements will soon begin on a 11.1 km section of Highway 1

near Chaplin.

"Work on this nearly $1.1 million surfacing project will begin on August

9th and should be completed by the end of August," Highways and

Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said. "The project should create

around 24 full-time jobs."

The surfacing project will take place on two sections in the westbound

lanes of Highway 1.

"It's essential to keep our provincial sections of the National Highway

System in good condition because they receive high traffic volumes,"

Atkinson said. "By strengthening and surfacing this section, Highway 1 by

Chaplin will continue to handle heavy traffic loads and volumes."

Potzus Paving and Road Maintenance Ltd. of Yorkton was awarded this

resurfacing project.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help improve the major highway system that

carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
