IMPROVEMENTS TO HIGHWAY 1 UNDERWAY

Released on April 26, 2001

Work will begin this week on a 13.6 km section of Highway 1 west of Regina.

"Work for this $2.1 million resurfacing project was anticipated to begin

mid-May, but will now start three weeks early and should be completed by

late June," Highways and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said.

"Completion of this job will require an estimated 24 full-time workers."

ASL Paving Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded this project.

The resurfacing project will take place on the westbound lanes of Highway 1

from the junction with Highway 6 west to the Grand Coulee Access. Crushing

and gravel haul to ASL's plant site in Regina's north industrial area took

place this winter to prepare for the project.

"Highway 1 experiences a high volume of traffic and it's important to keep

our national highway system in good driving condition," Atkinson said.

"There are several improvement projects on Highway 1 this season, which

will result in a smoother drive for travellers."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record

$311.7 million, which will help to improve the major highway system that

carries 65 per cent of provincial traffic.
