PRINCE OF WALES HONOURED

Released on April 24, 2001

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales will be invested by Lieutenant

Governor Lynda Haverstock as the first honourary member of the Saskatchewan

Order of Merit.

The award is the province's highest honour and will be presented to the

Prince at a ceremony in the Legislative Chamber in Regina April 26th.

This was announced today by the lieutenant governor after amendments to the

Provincial Emblems and Honours Act, providing for honourary membership in

the order for non-residents of Saskatchewan, were adopted by the

legislature and received royal assent.

"We are honoured by The Prince of Wales' acceptance of the Saskatchewan

Order of Merit," the lieutenant governor said. "His Royal Highness has

shown outstanding leadership in a number of areas of importance to

Saskatchewan, including agriculture and rural life, voluntarism, youth and

education, health care and inner city issues."

The Prince is the first member of the royal family to receive a provincial

honour in Canada. The lieutenant governor will invest him with the Order

of Merit following the presentation of the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal to

16 recipients.

The Saskatchewan Order of Merit was established in 1985 to recognize

achievement, excellence and outstanding contributions to the well-being of

the province and its residents. Since its inception, 94 citizens have been

appointed to the order. Among the recipients are First Nations artist

Allen Sapp, former premier Allan Blakeney, Olympic curler Sandra Schmirler

(a posthumous appointment) and broadcaster Pamela Wallin.
