MORE MONEY IN FARMERS' POCKETS

Released on September 26, 2000

The new Farm Land Property Tax Rebate applications are on their way to Rural

Service Centres and Rural Municipality offices.

The program provides a rebate of 25 per cent of the current school tax levy on

farm land. It is a two-year, $50 million commitment by the Government of

Saskatchewan.

"The tax rebate program is one of many initiatives our government has

undertaken as part of its commitment to help producers adjust to changing

market conditions," Agriculture and Food Minister Clay Serby said.

"Tax reduction combined with support for increased diversification and value-

added activity in the province will help strengthen our industry."

The tax rebate, announced in the 2000-2001 provincial budget, is in effect for

the 2000 and 2001 tax years. It follows the elimination of the provincial

sales tax on all farm gasoline and the tax rebate on horticulture and livestock

facilities.

All farmland, except for the home quarter, is eligible for the rebate. If

there is no home quarter, or if the farm residence is located on a parcel of

less than 130 acres, then the highest assessed quarter will be exempted.

Application forms are available on the Saskatchewan Agriculture and Food

website at www.agr.gov.sk.ca. Farmers can call toll-free at 1-877-874-5365 for

more information on the program.
