Saskatchewan cancer patients are benefiting from new, state-of-the-artradiation therapy at the Saskatoon Cancer Centre.
A new linear accelerator and computer treatment planning system officially
opened today, giving Saskatoon four operational units. The new system ensures
that the most appropriate and effective doses of radiation are delivered to
cancer patients.
"This is vitally important technology," Health Minister Pat Atkinson said.
"The addition of a new, high-energy accelerator and treatment planning system
will improve the quality of life for many of our province's cancer patients."
Saskatchewan Health provided $1.5 million towards the purchase of the new
accelerator and treatment planning system at the centre. This additional
funding was used to supplement the $1.7 million that came from the agency's
budget surplus in previous years.
As well, the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency recently recruited four new oncologists
and three radiation therapists. There is currently a national and
international shortage of radiation therapists and radiation oncologists. Both
professionals are essential members of the cancer treatment team and will be
required in order to use the newly acquired treatment equipment.
"The new linear accelerator will improve waiting times for treatment of deep
seated turmours," said Bob Allen, Chief Executive Officer, Saskatchewan Cancer
Agency.
Waiting times for cancer treatment in Saskatchewan continue to be among the
best in Canada. Saskatchewan is one of the few provinces in Canada that
doesn't send cancer patients out of province for radiation treatment. This is
because the province is meeting national guidelines for acceptable waiting
times for this type of cancer treatment.
