IMPROVEMENTS COMPLETED ON HIGHWAY 56

Released on October 27, 2000

Work to rebuild Highway 56 between Indian Head and Katepwa Lake was completed

this week.

In the past two years more than 19 km of Highway 56 was upgraded with work done

under two different projects valued at almost $2.5 million.

This week, 12.6 km of surfacing was completed north of Indian Head at a cost of

$1.7 million. The work, by Warner Construction Ltd., began in July and used an

estimated 41 jobs in completing the project. In fall 1999, more than 6.5 km of

Highway 56 near Katepwa Lake was resurfaced by Kirsch Construction of Middle

Lake, at a cost of $750,000.

"The strengthening of Highway 56 means we can better serve local traffic,

cottage owners, and tourist traffic that regularly use this highway. This also

means a better road to support grain haul traffic," Highways and Transportation

Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "This highway's thin surface had suffered from

increasing truck traffic as have many other provincial highways."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation received its largest budget this year,

totalling $262 million. This includes $12 million announced in early October

for repair work on thinly surfaced rural highways and to prepare the department

for substantial improvements next year.
