CASINO REGINA TO GET MAJOR FACELIFT

Released on October 27, 2000

Regina's business community applauded the provincial government today for

giving the green light for Casino Regina to proceed with a $24 million site

improvement and expansion project.

Casino Regina's development project will include a new showroom facility that

will accommodate up to 684 guests, a 490 stall parkade and a Learning and

Development Centre to be located in the CP Telegraph Building. Final details

are still being worked out for pedway connections from the casino to the

Cornwall Centre, the Sears Parkade and the Delta Hotel.

"Casino Regina is a tremendous commercial and tourism asset for the province

and has become one of Saskatchewan's top tourism attractions," Minister

Responsible for the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation Joanne Crofford said.

"This new project will solidify the casino's position as a destination tourism

attraction and ensure the positive economic impacts for the downtown, the city

and the province continue well into the future."

Crofford also applauded Casino Regina for its role in providing jobs and

opportunities for Aboriginal people. "No other workplace in the province has

been able to come close to the level of cultural diversity evident at Casino

Regina. Over 50% of the employees are of Aboriginal ancestry and this is not

just at the entry level. Aboriginal people fill close to 40 per cent of the

management positions at the casino."

"Casino Regina's future plans will play a major role in enhancing the

downtown's entertainment sector," Regina Regional Economic Development

Authority Chair Wil Olive said. "The new entertainment facility will generate

activity and excitement and provide an important venue to develop and showcase

talented local entertainers."

The province also released the casino's annual report today, which shows more

than 1.7 million people made their way to Casino Regina last year. During the

1999/2000 fiscal year the corporation posted a net profit of $19.8 million.

This was up 28 per cent over the previous year's record profit of $15.4

million. This positive trend appears to be continuing because second quarter

results also released today for the period April 1st to September 30th, 2000

show a net income of $12.8 million, up from $10.2 million last year.
