HIGHWAY 22 SURFACING PROJECT IN PROGRESS

Released on October 24, 2000

A 7 km surfacing project on Highway 22 west of Lipton is now underway.

"On-road work for this $588,000 project began in mid-October with the

completion targeted for mid-June 2001," Highways and Transportation Minister

Maynard Sonntag said. "Completion of this job will require an estimated 32

jobs."

Warner Construction Ltd. of Regina was awarded this project as the lowest of

five bidders. The project includes a layer of surfacing to strengthen the road

plus a double seal coat to help preserve its condition. The final seal will be

added next May.

"The condition of this highway has been deteriorating due to increasing traffic

volumes and weights seen on this road," Sonntag said. "This additional 7 km

will complement the 5.3 km surfacing improvements that took place this year on

Highway 22 west of Lipton."

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation received its largest budget in history

this year, totalling $262 million. This includes $12 million announced earlier

this month for repair work on thinly surfaced rural highways and to prepare the

department for substantial improvement projects next year.
