HEALTH CARE IMPROVED IN ARBORFIELD AREA

Released on October 23, 2000

A new primary care nurse will help improve the services available at the

Arborfield & District Health Care Centre.

Primary Care Nurse Louise Kowal will divide her time between Arborfield and

Carrot River, working in consultation with Dr. Mark Fowler.

Dr. Fowler and Kowal will be working with other team members such as public

health nurses, dieticians, therapists, social workers, home care workers,

pharmacists and the community to plan and deliver services that emphasize early

intervention, health promotion, treatment and follow-up care.

"Primary care nurses provide a wide range of services," Associate Health

Minister Judy Junor said today, during a tour of the health care centre. "They

serve as a familiar first contact into the health system and make it even

easier for residents to get the help they need."

Kowal's advanced clinical training allows her to work in an expanded role,

treating patients with common problems and helping them manage chronic

conditions. Her assistance will enable Dr. Fowler to spend more time with

seriously ill people and become more involved with community outreach and

education.

"We are pleased to offer this service to the Arborfield, Zenon Park and Carrot

River area," said Andrew Will, North-East Health District Chief Executive

Officer. "I am confident that this approach to the delivery of primary health

care will be a valuable enhancement to the services provided."

This is one of 18 primary health service sites across Saskatchewan established

under Saskatchewan's Primary Health Services Initiative.

The model is widely accepted across Canada and around the world, as an

effective method of planning and delivering a wide variety of health services.
