Today Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing Minister Jack Hillson presented $3million from the Centenary Fund toward the development of exhibits at each of
the Western Development Museum's (WDM) four locations. The museum will unveil
a series of exhibits in 2005 titled Winning the Prairie Gamble to celebrate
Saskatchewan's centennial.
"These exhibits will help current and future generations understand the work
and dedication of the people who made Saskatchewan the vibrant and strong
province it is today," Hillson said.
The exhibit at the Saskatoon WDM will chronicle the human story of farming
through a series of artifact-rich, interactive presentations about what it was
like to live and work on a farm and the challenges that farm families faced.
The exhibits at the Moose Jaw, North Battleford and Yorkton WDM's will provide
visitors with a walk-through time-line spanning Saskatchewan's one hundred
years as a province. The exhibits will complement the themes of each WDM
branch, Transportation, Heritage Farm and Village, and Story of People.
"This is an exciting project," said Western Development Museum Chair Kate
Waygood. "There have been so many new developments in the past one hundred
years that it will be a eye-opener to see just what changes have taken place
during our province's first century. We expect many local families, as well as
visitors to explore these new exhibits."
The Centenary Fund, announced in Saskatchewan's 2000-01 budget, was established
to leave a legacy of Saskatchewan's Centennial for future generations. Leading
up to the Saskatchewan centennial celebrations in 2005, the Saskatchewan
Government is funding projects that will address specific infrastructure needs
related to heritage properties, parks, highways, environmental clean-up,
education, housing and municipal infrastructure. The $3 million for the WDM
will be provided over the next four years.
