The completion of $1 million in road work near Cumberland House was officiallymarked today with an on-road ribbon cutting event and celebration at Charlebois
School.
Almost 7 km of surfacing work was completed on Highway 123 and other roads near
Cumberland House over the summer and fall. Areas included the loop to the
Historic Site, the road to the airport/recreation site, as well as Highway 123
from Cumberland House to south of the bridge. Work was done by Carmack's
Enterprises Ltd. and Lonesome Prairie Ltd.
"Work on these roads consisted of laying down a base course, and a double seal
coat," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Prior to
this work, these were gravel roads. Residents, travellers and commercial
vehicles will now enjoy driving a much-improved mud-free and dust-free surface."
"This road work improves community access for northern residents and
contributes to the growth of tourism travel to Northern Saskatchewan," Northern
Affairs Minister Keith Goulet said.
The $1 million for this work came from the province's Centenary Fund. The $120
million Centenary Fund was created to help finance infrastructure and capital
projects as Saskatchewan approaches the 2005 provincial centennial.
Another project in Cumberland House finished up earlier this summer. Work on
Cumberland House Main Sreet began last year and concluded in August with
application of an asphalt surface. Contractors were HJR Asphalt Ltd., Venture
Construction Inc. and GW Construction Ltd. Total cost for grading and
surfacing on this project was $447,000, paid for from the Saskatchewan Highways
and Transportation budget.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation received its largest budget in history
this year, totalling $262 million. This includes $12 million announced earlier
this month for repair work on thinly surfaced rural highways and to prepare the
department for substantial improvement projects next year.
