Roadwork at Moose Mountain Provincial Park is nearing completion.Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation crews completed numerous road
improvements throughout the park earlier in the summer. Gravelling on the
Christopher Trail from Highway 9 to the east boundary of the park was completed
at the end of September. Swaze Red-E-Mix Ltd. of Wawota did the gravelling,
while ASL Paving of Regina did the paving work. Additional paving was also
completed by ASL Paving on internal park roadways.
Strengthening and sealing on various roads in the Fish Creek Campground will be
completed by month-end by Morsky Construction of Regina.
"Tourism generates an estimated $1 billion annually in Saskatchewan," Highways
and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "These improvements will
ensure tourists enjoy smooth roads at the park next season."
"Our provincial parks attract visitors from across the province, Canada, and
the U.S.," Environment and Resource Management Minister Buckley Belanger said.
"Improvements to our parks leave a favorable impression with tourists and
encourage repeat business."
The improvements totalled $489,000, paid for by Saskatchewan Highways and
Transportation, Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, and the
Centenary Fund.
The $120 million Centenary Fund was created to help finance infrastructure and
capital projects as Saskatchewan approaches the 2005 provincial centennial.
Additional park improvement projects at various Saskatchewan parks will be
completed with Centenary Funds next year.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation received its largest budget in history
this year, totalling $262 million. This includes $12 million announced earlier
this month for repair work on thinly surfaced rural highways and to prepare the
department for substantial improvement projects next year.
