HIGHWAY 2 & HIGHWAY 15 RECEIVE A FACELIFT

Released on October 16, 2000

A 2.7 km section of Highway 2 south of Simpson will be resurfaced and a 14.7 km

section of Highway 15 west of Nokomis is being upgraded from thin membrane

surface (TMS) to a more durable sealed granular pavement.

"Work has started on this $1.9 million surfacing project and is expected to be

completed next summer," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag

said. "Completion of this job will require an estimated 45 full-time workers."

The contract for this major improvement project was awarded to W.F. Botkin

Construction Ltd. of Regina as the lowest of eight bidders.

The highway sections will receive a double seal coat once the surfacing is

completed to better protect the highway surface. Funding from the Canada-Agri

Infrastructure Program is covering much of the cost of the work on Highway 15.

"Highways 15 and 2 have seen a sharp increase in heavy truck traffic and as a

result have experienced some deterioration," Sonntag said. "These highways are

important routes for local and provincial residents and we recognize the

importance of preservation and maintenance work."

Across the province, there are 101 major projects on 53 different highways.

Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $262 million, the largest in the

department's history.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
