PASQUA INTERCHANGE OPENED TO TRAFFIC

Released on October 11, 2000

A $7.2 million interchange to improve safety at Pasqua Street and Highway 11

north of Regina opened officially to traffic today.

"This interchange provides a long-term solution to safety concerns," Highways

and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "This safety improvement

will be welcomed by all motorists."

Roadway construction for this project began in June 1999. This included the

twinning of Pasqua Street in partnership with the City of Regina, constructing

the bridge approaches and off-ramps, and realigning the grid road in

partnership with the RM of Sherwood.

This intersection has consistently had one of the highest accident rates of all

intersections in the province. Between 1990 and 1999, there were 93 accidents,

with two fatalities and 40 injuries.

The interchange will accommodate the nearly 18,000 vehicles per day that use

Highway 11 and Pasqua Street. The entire $7.2 million cost was funded by the

provincial government.

"By completing this major safety improvement project, we are demonstrating our

commitment to improve the transportation network in Saskatchewan," Sonntag

said. "The recently announced $12 million investment to the department budget

is another clear signal of the high priority of transportation."

The speed limit on Highway 11 had been reduced from 100 km/h to 80 km/h. With

the interchange opening, the 100 km/h speed limit will be re-instated shortly.
