A total of 12.6 km on Highways 10 and 310 near Balcarres will be repaved, resulting in a smoother driving surface for travellers. Intersection
improvements will also take place.
"It is anticipated work will begin this week on this $1.2 million surfacing
project and is expected to be completed in late October," Highways and
Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Completion of this job will
require an estimated 40 full-time workers."
The contract for this major improvement project was recently awarded to Potzus
Construction Ltd. of Yorkton.
The paving project will begin on Highway 10 near the junction of Highway 22
east of Balcarres. It will continue to Highway 56 west of Balcarres and on
Highway 310 at its junction with Highway 10, for one kilometre north.
The project includes improvements to three intersections in and around
Balcarres, as well as the extension of a service road at Balcarres.
"An extensive traffic safety study found improvements were necessary at these
intersections," Sonntag said.
Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different
highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 Budget is $250 million, the
largest in the department's history.
Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for
construction signs and equipment.
