A beefed-up 2000 Winter Tender Schedule will act as the catalyst for morehighway improvements in southern Saskatchewan next summer.
Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's Winter Tender Schedule is the
largest-ever with Saskatchewan highway work valued at over $90 million. Many
road improvements for southern Saskatchewan stem from this boost in funding.
The Winter Tender Schedule ensures timely and efficient delivery of highway
improvements next spring. If 2000-01 projects were not tendered until spring
2001, many projects could not be completed as planned next year. The Winter
Tender Schedule also gives the road building industry time to prepare bids and
determine workload, staffing and equipment requirements for the upcoming
construction season.
"This year's schedule allows us to fix more deteriorating provincial roads and
stay on target with twinning plans," Highways and Transportation Minister
Maynard Sonntag said. "We are committed to improve Saskatchewan highways.
"Beginning this winter and continuing through next year, we will be making
substantial improvements to the highway system."
The Winter Tender Schedule dedicates $34 million to resurfacing 266 km of
pavement on 18 main Saskatchewan highways. In southern Saskatchewan, these
improvements include:
Highway 1 - resurfacing 13.7 km from Regina to west of Grand Coulee;
Highway 1 – 20 km of resurfacing from Belle Plain to Moose Jaw;
Highway 1 – 13 km of resurfacing from Grenfell west;
Highwy 1 – resurfacing 15.4 km from the Secretan Grid to Chaplin;
Highway 6 – resurfacing 24.6 km in the Qu'Appelle Valley and Southey
areas;
Highway 13 - resurfacing 10.3 km from the junction of Highway 39 to
east of Trossachs;
Highway 21 – resurfacing 9.3 km from the junction of Highway 21 to the
junction of Highway 271;
Highway 32 - resurfacing 6.4 km west of Cabri to east of Shackleton;
Highway 39 - resurfacing a total of 14.4 km at Milestone and south of
Lang;
Highway 42 – resurfacing 7 km from Central Butte west.
Highlights of the Winter Tender Schedule include $21 million to be spent on
upgrading 11 thin membrane corridors to a structural pavement for a total of
121 km across the province. In southern Saskatchewan, these thin membrane
surface improvement projects include:
Highway 8 – grading and paving 9.6 km south of Pipestone Creek to south
of Moosomin;
Highway 13 - paving 16 km from Assiniboia east;
Highway 19 – paving 22.4 km north of Chaplin to Central Butte;
Highway 364 – paving 14.6 km from Balgonie to Edenwold.
Winter Tender Schedule highlights include $18 million to twin 70 km of Highways
1 and 16 in 2001. In southern Saskatchewan, road construction will include:
Highway 1 – paving an 18 km section of new twinned lanes from east of
Wolseley to east of Sintaluta;
Highway 1 – paving a 15.4 km section of new twinned lanes east of
Sintaluta to east of Indian Head;
Highway 1 – paving a nine kilometre section of new twinned lanes
beginning 10 km east of the Alberta border and continuing east;
Highway 1 - paving an 11.1 km section of new twinned lanes from the
Alberta border east.
Across the province this winter, $9 million will be spent on gravel stockpiling
to ensure surface repair materials are in place for patching, sealing and other
maintenance work next spring.
