HUMBOLDT – SASKATCHEWAN'S NEWEST CITY

Released on November 3, 2000

Humboldt will soon be Saskatchewan's thirteenth city.

To become a city, a town must have a population of over 5,000 people and make a

request for the change in status. The 1996 census lists Humboldt's population

as 5,074. Currently the town's population is estimated at more than 5,500.

"Town Council feels Humboldt is a growing community and by operating under the

jurisdiction of a city, we can better serve our residents' needs," Humboldt

Mayor Doug Still said.

"Congratulations to Humboldt on achieving the status of city," Municipal

Affairs Culture and Housing Minister Jack Hillson said. "It is a tribute to

the hard work of the elected officials and citizens of Humboldt that this

community has continued to grow and prosper to the point where it is taking its

place as Saskatchewan's newest city."

"Our community is growing due to the ongoing ability of people to work together

and build a strong business and community base," Still said. "We are a vibrant

trading centre for the central part of Saskatchewan with a strong agricultural,

manufacturing and tourism base which is being added to in recent weeks by

developments in information technology in our community."

Humboldt will officially become a city November 7th. The election of a new

mayor and city council took place October 25th. They will be sworn in November

7th.
