RESURFACING TO OCCUR ON HIGHWAYS 6, 55 AND 123 NEAR CHOICELAND

Released on May 31, 2000

Portions of three highways near Choiceland will soon be repaved. Highway 6

will receive 8.1 km of resurfacing; Highway 55 will receive 3.3 km; and Highway

123 will receive 5 km, for a total of 16.4 km.

"This $1.3 million project is expected to begin in early June and should be

completed by mid-August," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag

said. "The completion of this job will require an estimated 30 full-time

workers."

Venture Construction Inc. of Saskatoon was awarded this contract as the lowest

of six bidders. The work will take place on Highway 6 from the junction of

Highways 55 and 6 south; Highway 55 east and west of the junction of Highways

55 and 6; and Highway 123 north of the junction of Highways 123 and 55. These

highways are a major tourism route leading into northern Saskatchewan.

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

"By resurfacing this highway, we are demonstrating our commitment to support

growth in tourism occurring in this area of the province," Sonntag said. "As

our budget increases, so does our ability to preserve and maintain provincial

highways."

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
