SURFACING SET FOR HIGHWAY 13 AND 37 NEAR SHAUNAVON

Released on May 25, 2000

A total of 15 km of surface improvements will be made on Highway 13 near

Eastend and on Highway 37. The new surface will provide a much smoother

highway for area travellers.

"Work began on this $1.8 million project this week and should be completed by

mid-August," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "An

estimated 45 full-time workers will be employed on this project."

The project will take place from the Town of Eastend's railway tracks on

Highway 13 south for 4.7 km and on Highway 37 from the Shaunavon railway tracks

10.3 km south. Morksy Construction Ltd. of Regina was awarded the contract as

the lowest of seven bidders.

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

"The Southwest Area Transportation Planning Committee identified Highways 13

and 37 as priorities in this area for improvements," Sonntag said. "By working

with local committees, our department has the ability to target the most

necessary highway improvement projects in local areas."

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
