PAVING PROJECT SET FOR HIGHWAY 7 NEAR ALSASK

Released on May 17, 2000

Crews are preparing to begin work on an 8.7 km resurfacing project on Highway 7

northeast of Alsask.

"It is anticipated that work will begin on this $1 million project the week of

May 15th and should be completed by mid June," Highways and Transportation

Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Completion of this job will require an

estimated 16 full-time workers."

Ramco Paving Ltd. of Regina was awarded this project as the lowest of seven

bidders. The work will occur west of the junction of Highway 7 and Highway 317.

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

"With a budget increase, we have the ability to focus on maintaining and

preserving our provincial highway network, which in turn supports our economy,"

Sonntag said. "Many provincial highways such as Highway 7 are stressed from

heavy truck traffic. We are working hard to address the challenges brought by

this increased traffic."

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
