The government is investing $3.8 million more in sustainable forestry.Key items supporting a sustainable forest include:
$2.5 million for forest renewal under SERM's Carbon Sequestration
Agreement with SaskPower. The agreement will see between five and six
million additional trees planted over the next three years.
an increase of $750,000 for enhanced land use planning and monitoring
programs, in support of the government's four-year plan to double the
size of the province's forest industry while creating 10,000 new jobs.
$350,000 for additional regeneration surveys to assess the renewal
status of previously burned or harvested areas.
$200,000 in new funding for the province's Dutch elm disease management
program, bringing the total program budget to $500,000.
"This is very good news for all of us who are committed to sustainable forest
management," Environment and Resource Management Minister Buckley Belanger said
at the Arbor Day celebration in Prince Albert today. "These additional
resources will be of enormous assistance as we work to balance our use of the
forest with the need to protect its long-term health."
