The Saskatchewan Council on Disability Issues begins holding community forumsthis week on the province's proposed direction for improving the quality of
life for people with disabilities.
In the 1998/99 budget, the government called for the creation of the Disability
Action Plan. The Saskatchewan Council on Disability Issues was appointed to
develop the plan. When it is finished, the plan will act as a blueprint to
ensure better opportunities for people with disabilities and help them fully
participate in society. Responses from the forums will be used to develop and
shape the action plan.
"These forums will ensure the Disability Action Plan reflects the priorities
and concerns of the disability community," Saskatchewan Council on Disability
Issues Chair Michael Huck said.
The council's mandate is to improve the quality of life of persons with
disabilities. It provides advice and input to the government on issues
affecting people with disabilities. The council is made up of 15 people
including some with disabilities, parents, care providers and volunteers.
"I am eager to review the next phase of the Disability Action Plan," Minister
Responsible for Disability Issues Harry Van Mulligen said. "The Disability
Action Plan process is an important part of our government's overall commitment
to remove existing barriers that exist in society and allowing all citizens
with disabilities to exercise their right to benefit from, and contribute to,
our province."
In Moose Jaw, the community forum takes place Tuesday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at the
Macoun Lounge, SIAST Palliser Campus.
