Eight km of Highway 23 near Porcupine Plain will be widened and resurfaced thisspring to upgrade the condition of this highway. The stretch of road is
located west of the junction of Highway 38.
"Work will begin on this $1.1 million project the week of May 1st and should be
completed by mid-June," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag
said. "An estimated 35 full-time workers will be employed on this project."
L & R Asphalt Ltd. of Regina was awarded this project as the lowest of eight
bidders. Improvements to Highway 23 will help to accommodate tourists
travelling to Greenwater Provincial Park and increasing truck traffic.
Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different
highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the
largest in the department's history.
"We are working to maintain a safe and reliable highway network," Sonntag
said. "As our budget increases, so does our ability to preserve and maintain
provincial highways."
Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for
construction signs and equipment.
