Health Minister Pat Atkinson has confirmed approval of the 1999-2000 BudgetPlan for the Twin Rivers Health District.
The plan outlines how the district is providing services to meet the health
needs of its residents. It provides for:
Acute care in Maidstone, Turtleford and Paradise Hill. These
facilities provide in-patient acute care to approximately 1,600 people
a year, in addition to out-patient services, such as chemotherapy;
Health centres in Cutknife, Neilburg and St. Walburg provide lab and x-
ray services, home care, community health services and access to
physician services;
Nursing homes in Maidstone, Cutknife, St. Walburg and Turtleford that
serve an estimated 130 people every year;
Home care services to close to 500 people a year and respite care
services to an estimated 40 people a year which enable people to remain
independent in their homes;
Community services such as mental health counselling, public health
(e.g. immunizations), addictions services, a dietician and physical
therapy; and
Emergency response including close to 800 ambulance trips a year.
"The Twin Rivers Health District is working hard to provide and improve service
to its residents," Atkinson said. "I want to commend the many health care
workers and other staff in the district, as well as management and board
members for their dedication to the health of their fellow citizens."
"The district is committed to providing both acute and long-term care services
in various sites, while improving its home care and emergency health services
so that district residents can receive services they need close to home," Twin
Rivers District Health Board Chair Bonnie O'Grady said
Provincial funding to the Twin Rivers Health District, including one-time
funding for Y2K and other purposes, is $9.4 million this year, up from $8.6
million last year - a 9.4 per cent increase. The district has planned for a
deficit of $425,000.
"The projected deficit of $425,000 equates to 4.5 per cent of the Twin Rivers
Health District's funding," Atkinson said. "We will be working with the
district to achieve a balanced budget to ensure the continuation of the
services people need to protect and maintain their health."
