BUDGET PLAN FOR TOUCHWOOD QU'APPELLE HEALTH DISTRICT APPROVED

Released on March 3, 2000

Health Minister Pat Atkinson has confirmed approval of the 1999-2000 Budget

Plan for the Touchwood Qu'Appelle Health District.

The plan outlines how the district is providing services to meet the health

needs of its residents. It provides for:

Hospitals, integrated care centres and health centres in Balcarres,

Fort Qu'Appelle, Lestock and Raymore that offer numerous out-patient

services and in-patient acute care to an estimated 2,100 people a year;

Nursing homes in Balcarres, Fort Qu'Appelle and Raymore serving 137

people each day;

Home care services to an estimated 440 people a year and respite care

services which enable people to remain independent in their homes;

Community services such as mental health counselling, public health

(e.g. immunizations), substance abuse counselling and dietetic

counselling;

Emergency response including an estimated 1700 ambulance trips a year

and an expanding first responder program; and

Services to help people improve their health and prevent illness and

injuries including diabetic education programs, podiatry and physical

therapy.

"The Touchwood Qu'Appelle Health District is working hard to provide and

improve service to its residents," Atkinson said. "I am particularly pleased

with the district's focus on building partnerships with First Nations as well

as other organizations and agencies."

"This has been a challenging and exciting year with relocation into two new

district facilities," Chair Thomas Braithwaite said. "We are thankful for the

tireless efforts of all staff working within the district."

Provincial funding to the Touchwood Qu'Appelle Health District, including one-

time funding for Y2K and other purposes is $10.4 million this year, up from

$9.6 million last year—an 8.0 per cent increase. The district has planned for

a deficit of $577,000.

"The projected deficit of $577,000 equates to 5.6 per cent of the Touchwood

Qu'Appelle Health District's funding. We will be working with the district to

achieve a balanced budget to ensure the continuation of the services people

need to protect and maintain their health," Atkinson said.
