Health Minister Pat Atkinson has confirmed approval of the Pasquia HealthDistrict's 1999/2000 Budget Plan.
The plan outlines how the district is providing services to meet the health
needs of its residents. It provides for:
Hospitals in Hudson Bay, Porcupine Plain, Kelvington and Tisdale.
These facilities provided in-patient acute care to 1,617 people in
1998/99. In addition, they perform an estimated 300 in-patient and day
surgeries a year. These facilities also provide numerous out-patient
services, such as laboratory, occupational and physical therapy and a
satellite hemodialysis unit;
Nursing homes in Tisdale, Kelvington, Porcupine Plain and Hudson Bay
which serve an estimated 240 people every year;
Home care, which served 597 people last year and respite care, which
served 81 people last year. These services enable people to remain
independent in their homes and give family caregivers a break from
their responsibilities.
Community services such as mental health counselling, public health
(e.g. immunizations) and physical therapy;
Emergency response including more than 1,100 ambulance trips a year; and
Services to help people improve their health and prevent illness and
injuries including programs for youth at risk, nutrition services and
diabetes clinics.
"The Pasquia Health District is working hard to provide and improve service to
its residents," Atkinson said. "I am particularly pleased to see the
district's primary care project in Hudson Bay get up and running, with the
recruitment of a primary care nurse. I am hopeful this service will support
the continuity of care including prevention, promotion, early intervention,
treatment, rehabilitation and continuing care."
"We are extremely grateful to all staff, physicians, volunteer workers and
emergency service workers for their dedication," Chair Carol Hayward said.
"Working together we have been able to provide high quality, comprehensive
health services to the residents of our district and have made a difference in
the lives of many people. Let us continue to work together for the good health
of all."
Provincial funding to the Pasquia Health District, including one time funding
for Y2K and other purposes is $16.3 million this year, up from $15.0 million
last year—a 8.7 per cent increase in funding. The district has planned for a
surplus of $193,000.
"The Pasquia Health District is doing a good job of providing services to meet
local needs while managing its resources," Atkinson said. "This modest
surplus will contribute to the long term stability of health care services in
the district."
