BUDGET PLAN FOR MOOSE MOUNTAIN HEALTH DISTRICT APPROVED

Released on March 3, 2000

Health Minister Pat Atkinson has confirmed approval of the 1999-2000 Budget

Plan for the Moose Mountain Health District.

The plan outlines how the district is providing services to meet the health

needs of its residents. It provides for:

Hospitals in Kipling, Redvers, Wawota and Arcola. These facilities

provided in-patient acute care services to 2,502 people in 1998/99, in

addition to numerous out-patient services, such as case management and

dietetic counselling.;

Nursing homes in Kipling, Wawota, Redvers, and Carlyle totalling 129

beds that served 154 people last year;

Home care services to an estimated 595 people a year and respite

services to an average of 43 people a year which help people remain

independent in their homes;

Community services such as mental health counselling, public health

(e.g. immunizations) and physical therapy;

Emergency response including an estimated 1,155 ambulance trips a year;

and

Services to help people improve their health and prevent illness and

injuries including Maryfield & District health Centre and 11

specifically designated Community Wellness Clinics.

"The Moose Mountain Health District is working hard to provide and improve

service to its residents," Atkinson said. "I am particularly pleased the Moose

Mountain Health District has achieved district wide accreditation status this

year."

Moose Mountain Health District Board Chair Alan Arthur said "On behalf of the

Board I would like to express our appreciation of the effort and commitment of

all community volunteers and district staff that allowed us to achieve

nationally recognized status by the Canadian Council on Health Services

Accreditation."

Provincial funding to the Moose Mountain Health District, including one-time

funding for Y2K and other purposes, is $11.8 million this year, up from $10.8

million last year - a 9.5 per cent increase in funding. The district has

planned for a deficit of $1.15 million.

"The projected deficit of $1.15 million equates to 9.8 per cent of the health

district's funding," Atkinson said. "We will be working with the district to

achieve a balanced budget to ensure the continuation of the services people

need to protect and maintain their health."
