BUDGET PLAN FOR MAMAWETAN CHURCHILL RIVER HEALTH DISTRICT APPROVED

Released on March 3, 2000

Health Minister Pat Atkinson has confirmed approval of the 1999-2000 Budget

Plan for the Mamawetan Churchill River Health District.

The plan outlines how the district is providing services to meet the health

needs of its residents. It provides for:

La Ronge Health Centre. This facility provides acute, long-term care

and community based services as well as health promotion and disease

prevention programs such as dietetic services and addictions

prevention. This facility provided in-patient acute care to 1,208

people last year in addition to out-patient services, such as

addictions counselling and diabetic education;

14 long term care and two respite beds located in the La Ronge Health

Centre;

Community services such as mental health counselling, public health

inspection and monitoring and the children's dental plan;

Telehealth pilot project in La Ronge and Pinehouse that links local

residents and their doctors with specialists in larger centres;

Maintaining and developing home care services which enable people to

remain independent in their homes;

Primary care services in Pinehouse and Sandy Bay;

Emergency response including more than 1,600 ambulance trips a year; and

Services to help people improve their health and prevent illness and

injuries including the acquired brain injury program, sexual wellness

pilot project, immunization and disease control.

"The Mamawetan Churchill River Health District is working hard to provide and

improve service to its residents," Atkinson said. "I am particularly pleased

to see the district continuing to advance the Telehealth project. This project

promises to help northern residents get better access to specialized care

without having to travel several hours from their homes."

"The successful development of strong partnerships around the Northern Diabetes

Prevention Proposal, Tobacco Reduction Strategy and Sexual Wellness Initiative

have been a significant milestone in our progress as a District," Mamawetan

Churchill River District Health Board Chair Louise Wiens said.

Provincial funding to the Mamawetan Churchill River Health District, including

one-time funding for Y2K and other purposes, is $9.2 million this year, up from

$8.6 million last year - a 6.8 per cent increase. The district has planned for

a surplus of $80,000.

"The Mamawetan Churchill River Health District is doing a good job of providing

services to meet local needs while managing its resources," Atkinson said.

"This modest surplus will contribute to the long term stability of health care

services in the district."
