Health Minister Pat Atkinson has confirmed approval of the 1999-2000 BudgetPlan for the Assiniboine Valley Health District (AVHD). The plan outlines how
the district is providing services to meet the health needs of its residents.
It provides for:
Hospitals in Canora, Kamsack and Preeceville. These facilities provide
in-patient acute care services to more than 3,000 people a year, in
addition to numerous out-patient services, such as dermatology and
emergency services;
Nursing homes in Canora, Kamsack, Invermay, Preeceville and Norquay
which serve more than 230 people every year;
Community services such as speech language pathology, physiotherapy and
home care;
Emergency response including Crisis Response Teams in the Canora,
Preeceville/Sturgis and Kamsack areas to provide counselling and
support in the aftermath of a tragedy; and
Services to help people improve their health and prevent illness and
injuries including healthy heart programs, diabetes prevention and farm
accident prevention.
"The Assiniboine Valley Health District is working hard to provide and improve
service to its residents," Atkinson said. "I am particularly pleased to see
the district's commitment to health promotion activities as demonstrated in the
first interactive children's health fair called Body Walk, with more than 250
grade one to four students participating."
"This year, once again, the District benefited from the hard work of excellent
employees throughout the organization. It is through the effort of these
people and our many volunteers that the quality of health care in the district
remains high. We thank each of them for their contributions," said AVHD Board
Chair Ivan Peterson.
Provincial funding to the Assiniboine Valley Health District, including one-
time funding for Y2K and other purposes, is $18.9 million this year, up from
$17.5 million last year-a 8.3 per cent increase. The district has planned for
a deficit of $268,000.
"The projected deficit of $268,000 equates to 1.4 per cent of the Assiniboine
Valley Health District's funding. We will be working with the district to
achieve a balanced budget to ensure the continuation of the services people
need to protect and maintain their health," Atkinson said.
