GRADING WORK BEGINS FOR YELLOWHEAD

Released on June 21, 2000

Grading work on Highway 16 between Maidstone and Lashburn is now underway.

This work is required to complete another 16.2 km of twinning on the Yellowhead

Highway.

"Work for this $3.5 million grading project should be completed by mid-

November," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "An

estimated 33 full-time workers will be employed on this project."

Nemanishen Contracting Ltd. of Langham was awarded the contract as the lowest

of eight bidders. The grading work on the new section of twinning will extend

from 5 km west of Maidstone to the eastern outskirts of Lashburn. The

surfacing of this section is planned for 2001 and should be open to traffic

that fall.

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

"We are working hard to meet our announced twinning commitment for the national

highway system," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said.

"We urge motorists to slow down and drive safely when they come upon

construction and maintenance."
