TENDER AWARDED FOR FURTHER TWINNING ON YELLOWHEAD

Released on June 12, 2000

The contract for grading work on Highway 16 between Maidstone and Lashburn has

been awarded. This work is required to complete another 16.2 km of twinning on

the Yellowhead Highway.

Nemanishen Contracting Ltd. of Langham was awarded the contract as the lowest

of eight bidders.

"Work is expected to begin on this $3.5 million grading project by mid-June and

should be completed by mid-November," Highways and Transportation Minister

Maynard Sonntag said. "An estimated 33 full-time workers will be employed on

this project."

The grading work on the new section of twinning will extend from 5 km west of

Maidstone to the eastern outskirts of Lashburn. The surfacing of this section

is planned for 2001 and should be open to traffic that fall.

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

"This additional twinning work demonstrates we are on track to meeting our

announced twinning commitment for the national highway system," Highways and

Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "We will continue to work toward

improving safety and driver comfort for travellers on the Yellowhead."

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
