RESURFACING TO OCCUR ON HIGHWAY 10 & 310 NEAR BALCARRES

Released on June 12, 2000

A total of 12.6 km on Highways 10 and 310 near Balcarres will be repaved,

resulting in a much smoother drive for travellers in this area as well as a

safer intersection.

The contract for this major improvement project was recently awarded to Potzus

Construction Ltd. of Yorkton.

"It is anticipated that work will begin on this $1.2 million surfacing project

in mid-August and will be completed in early October," Highways and

Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Completion of this job will

require an estimated 40 full-time workers."

The paving project will begin on Highway 10 near the junction of Highway 22

east of Balcarres. It will continue to Highway 56 west of Balcarres and on

Highway 310 at its junction with Highway 10 for another kilometre.

The project includes improvements to three intersections in and around

Balcarres, as well as the extension of a service road at Balcarres.

"An extensive department traffic safety study found improvements were necessary

at this intersection," Sonntag said. "We are moving quickly to alleviate

safety concerns."

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different highways.

Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the largest in the

department's history.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
