NEW K-12 SCHOOL IN KENNEDY

Released on June 12, 2000

Students in the Langbank-Kennedy area have much to celebrate today. The

provincial government has approved construction of a new K-12 school to replace

Langbank Elementary and Kennedy High schools.

"The Broadview School Division, community members and the provincial government

all recognize the importance of this new school for students in this area,"

Education Minister Jim Melenchuk said.

"Kennedy High School has served Langbank-Kennedy students very well for 45

years. However, the time has come to replace this school to provide a more

comfortable and modern educational facility."

Saskatchewan Education and the school division will share the cost of the new

school. The total estimated cost of construction is $3 million. The

government will contribute an estimated $1.65 million.

This project is one in a series of major capital initiatives announced in the

last few months in communities around the province. The Provincial Budget

contains $29.2 million in financial support for school capital projects. This

includes $5 million from the government's new Centenary Fund.

"This project demonstrates the government's commitment to work with school

divisions to provide students with comfortable and well-equipped learning

facilities. This announcement takes us one step closer to achieving our goal

of addressing our highest-priority school construction projects," Melenchuk

said.

The original Kennedy School opened in 1955. The new school is expected to open

by September 2001.
