A contract has been awarded to grade 10.3 km of Highway 909 south of TurnorLake.
Points North Construction Ltd. of La Ronge has been awarded the contract as the
lowest of four bidders.
"It is anticipated that work will begin on this $1.2 million project in late
June and is expected to be completed by late October," Highways and
Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "An estimated 33 full-time
workers will be employed on this project. Many of these workers are expected
to come from the local community."
The construction project will begin 19 km north of the junction of Highway 155
and Highway 909 and continue to Turnor Lake. This grading contract will
complete the upgrading of Highway No. 909, which commenced in the fall of 1997.
Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different
highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the
largest in the department's history. In total, the province will spend $34.6
million this year to preserve, maintain and improve the condition of highways
and airports in Northern Saskatchewan.
"By strengthening our transportation system in the north, we are in turn
strengthening economic development opportunities in Saskatchewan," Sonntag
said. "As our budget increases, so does our ability to preserve and maintain
provincial highways."
Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for
construction signs and equipment.
