PAVING SET FOR TWINNED SECTION OF HIGHWAY 16 EAST OF SASKATOON

Released on June 6, 2000

Paving is set to begin on a new eight kilometre twinned section of Highway 16

east of Saskatoon as well as paving along associated roadways. In total,

contract crews will undertake 14.4 km of paving work.

"It is anticipated that work on this $6.5 million surfacing project will begin

this week and should be completed by the fall of this year," Highways and

Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Completion of this job will

require an estimated 94 full-time workers."

Anderson Rental and Paving Ltd. of Saskatoon was awarded this project as the

lowest of eight bidders. Paving will begin on the new lanes of Highway 16 east

of the cloverleaf at the Highway 11 intersection to approximately one kilometre

west of Floral.

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

"Safety concerns resulting from high traffic volumes on Highway 16 east of

Saskatoon will be addressed with this significant twinning project," Sonntag

said. "This project will improve traffic flow and safety in the Saskatoon

area.

"By improving safety conditions on Highway 16 east of Saskatoon, we are working

toward fulfilling our commitment to maintain a safe and reliable transportation

system."

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
