GRADING BEGINS ON TRANSCANADA HIGHWAY 1 WEST

Released on July 17, 2000

Grading work has started on Highway 1 from the Alberta border east for a future

11.2 km section of four lane highway.

"Work for this $2.2 million grading project should be completed by late

September," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said.

"Completion of this job will require an estimated 33 full-time workers."

This grading work is the next phase in the twinning on Highway 1, which is part

of the National Highway System. Cee Gee Earth Moving Ltd. was awarded the

contract as the lowest of nine bidders.

Paving on this section should take place next year.

"Twinning on Highway 1 west is one of our department's priorities," Sonntag

said. "It will increase the safety and comfort levels for travellers."

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for

construction signs and equipment.
