PIERCELAND GETS NEW WATER SYSTEM

Released on July 6, 2000

The taps are on and the water is flowing. That's the word from the Village of

Pierceland, where a new $2.64 million water treatment plant and distribution

system financed by Sask Water, the Village and Municipal Affairs, Culture and

Housing is now providing more than 200 community outlets with a quality source

of water.

"Water quality means a better quality of life and now that the village's new

water treatment plant and distribution system is up and running, the residents

of Pierceland will be receiving some of the best quality water in the

province," said Maynard Sonntag, minister responsible for Sask Water, who was

on hand for today's grand opening celebrations in Pierceland.

Sask Water built the $1.4 million water treatment plant and supply system. The

village invested $1.04 million into the distribution system while Municipal

Affairs, Culture and Housing provided $200,000 for system development through

the Provincial-Municipal Infrastructure Program.

"Everybody's happy. Everybody likes the water pressure. I haven't heard one

person say they weren't thrilled with the quality of water we now have," said

Pierceland Mayor Jim Krushelnitzky, whose community has been transformed from a

portrait of rust stains and yellow laundry to one of iron-free drinking water

and clean white clothes. "It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here."

The water treatment plant uses a conventional groundwater treatment process to

reduce high concentrations of iron and manganese common to the area. The water

is then chlorinated prior to distribution. The distribution system consists of

approximately 10,000 metres of water pipeline with connections to 225

households and businesses.

"The Village of Pierceland is another example of our commitment to helping

Saskatchewan communities secure adequate sources of good water, both in terms

of quality and quantity," Sonntag said. "Good water makes good sense. And I

am truly delighted to see the people of Pierceland excited by the results of

this project."
