ASSISTANCE FOR VANGUARD

Released on July 4, 2000

Premier Roy Romanow and Vanguard Mayor Dorothy Saunderson pledged co-operation

for the continued health and safety of Vanguard and area residents following

excessive rainfall and subsequent flooding. The premier spoke to the mayor by

telephone this afternoon.

A local state of emergency was declared early July 4 by the municipal council.

"The mayor and council of Vanguard have responded quickly to this emergency

situation," Romanow said. "Provincial and municipal officials are working

closely to ensure the continued health and safety of area residents. The

province has provided fresh drinking water, pumps, and water testing and

treatment supplies to the area."

Provincial assistance is being provided through numerous agencies including

Sask Water, SaskPower, Highways and Transportation, Health and Social

Services.

"We have set up an emergency operation centre in the Vanguard Health Centre,"

Saunderson said. "We have also set up a public inquiry line for concerned

residents to call at (306) 582-2056. Premier Romanow assured me that the

provincial government would be doing everything it could to help us during this

emergency."

Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag, who is also minister

responsible for SaskWater, travelled to Vanguard this afternoon to assess the

situation. Sask Water is flying over the area to monitor the flooding

situation.

Saskatchewan Emergency Preparedness is also in Vanguard assisting the community

with emergency procedures such as establishing their emergency centre and co-

ordinating the activities of the government departments involved.

Highways and Transportation officials are working in the area evaluating the

situation, assisting in traffic control, making emergency repairs where

possible and will be receiving condition reports throughout the day. For

updated highway condition reports call the Highway Hotline at 1-888-335-7623

(outside Regina and Saskatoon), in Regina call 787-7623 and in Saskatoon call

933-8333.
