MINISTER OUTLINES FORMER DEPUTY MINISTER'S STATUS

Released on February 4, 2000

Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag today outlined the status

of former Deputy Minister Brian King in response to questions raised about

King's appointment to the position of Special Advisor.

Criticism has been raised with respect to retaining King's services at a time

when the Highways and Transportation budget is competing for scarce budget

resources.

Sonntag indicated that the decision to re-assign King and appoint Styles was

done for the following reasons: "Mr. King is suffering from an illness

requiring a prolonged absence from his duties as deputy minister and for which

he is entitled to sick leave. To ensure that Highways and Transportation

continues to have a full-time leader at its helm a decision was made to appoint

Ron Styles in a permanent capacity. To facilitate Mr. Styles' appointment,

Mr. King was re-assigned as Special Advisor while absent on sick leave.

"The Government, through Mr. Styles' appointment, maintains strong leadership

in Highways and Transportation. Upon his return from sick leave other

employment options for Mr. King will be assessed."
