RESURFACING SET FOR HIGHWAY 7

Released on December 21, 2000

A tender has been awarded for 9.8 km of resurfacing on Highway 7 west of

Marengo.

"Roadwork on this $1.7 million resurfacing project is anticipated to begin in

early May 2001 and be completed by mid-June," Highways and Transportation

Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "This project is expected to create 22 full-

time jobs."

HJR Asphalt of Saskatoon was awarded the tender as the lowest of six bidders.

Resurfacing work on Highway 7 will begin 9 km west of the junction of Highways

7 and 317 and continue to the Alberta border. This 9.8 km improvement project

was identified in the 2000/2001 Winter Tender Schedule for Saskatchewan highway

work, worth an estimated $90 million.

Tendering next year's projects now allows for crushed gravel and sand to be

hauled during the winter when roads are frozen, avoiding damage that would be

caused if the material was hauled in the spring or summer.

"The department is working hard to revitalize our highway network," Sonntag

said. "Motorists in this area will notice major improvements on this highway

once work is completed next construction season."

Gravel for this project will be crushed during the winter. Travellers in the

Alsask and Marengo regions should be watching for large trucks hauling gravel

during the months of December, January and February on Highways 7 and 44 as

well as municipal roads south of Highway 44.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record $275.5

million. Higher than expected oil and gas revenues has also enabled the

provincial government to budget an additional $150 million over the next three

years to fix Saskatchewan roads.
