IMPROVEMENTS TO PULP HAUL CUT ACROSS ROAD

Released on December 21, 2000

A tender has been awarded for a further 12.3 km of surfacing on the Pulp Haul

Cut Across Road north of Prince Albert.

"This $1.9 million project is anticipated to begin in early August, 2001 and be

completed by late August," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag

said. "It is estimated 41 full-time jobs will be created to complete this

project."

Carmacks Enterprises Ltd. was awarded this project as the lowest of seven

bidders.

Surfacing work with a double seal coat to strengthen the Pulp Haul Cut Across

will begin 8 km northwest of its junction with Highway 55 and continue for 12.3

km to Highway 2. This is a continuation of the 8 km that was completed in the

2000 construction season at a cost of $1.3 million.

This 12.3 km surfacing project was identified in the 2000/2001 Winter Tender

Schedule for Saskatchewan highway work, worth an estimated $90 million.

Tendering next year's projects now allows for crushed gravel and sand to be

hauled during the winter when roads are frozen, avoiding damage that would be

caused if the material was hauled in the spring or summer.

"This road is being upgraded to handle increasing heavy truck haul on this

industrial route," Sonntag said. "The timber industry is growing in the Prince

Albert area and requires road improvements to carry this traffic."

Gravel for this project will be crushed during the winter. Travellers in the

Prince Albert region should be watching for large trucks hauling gravel during

the months of January and February on Highway 2 and municipal roads east and

west of White Star.

Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation's budget this year is a record $275.5

million. Higher than expected oil and gas revenues has also enabled the

provincial government to budget an additional $150 million over the next three

years to fix Saskatchewan roads.
