A tender has been awarded for extensive rehabilitation of the La Ronge Airport.
"Crews will start crushing gravel this winter for this $4 million improvement
to the La Ronge Airport. The project should be finished by early August 2001,"
Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "Completion of this
job will require an estimated 32 jobs."
Carmacks Enterprises Ltd. was awarded this project as the lowest of four
bidders. The rehabilitation work will include the resurfacing of the primary
runway, taxiways and apron for the La Ronge Airport.
This $4 million project will be administered by Saskatchewan Highways and
Transportation and funded by Transport Canada under the Airport Capital
Assistance Program.
"The airport system is very important to residents of northern Saskatchewan,"
Sonntag said. "The La Ronge airport meets a variety of local needs, such as
emergency medical evacuations."
The Saskatchewan Highways and Transportation budget is now a record $274
million, a 17 per cent increase over the 1999-2000 budget. The provincial
government injected $24 million to the budget this fall.
