PARKLAND REGIONAL COLLEGE RECEIVES FUNDING

Released on December 4, 2000

The government is investing more than $3.25 million in Parkland Regional

College. This money from the Centenary Fund will be used to develop a joint-

use facility with the Yorkton Regional High School and to improve technology-

enhanced learning.

"Strengthening our public institutions is one of the best ways we can celebrate

Saskatchewan's centennial," Post-Secondary Education and Skills Training

Minister Glenn Hagel said. "This funding will help Parkland Regional College

bring a wide variety of training opportunities to people in the Parkland

region. This makes learning more accessible and affordable."

"Saskatchewan Education is pleased Parkland Regional College and Yorkton

Regional High School will be expanding upon their existing partnership,"

Education Minister Jim Melenchuk said. "I am confident this strengthened

relationship will translate into more efficient, higher quality educational

opportunities for our students."

The government is providing $3.25 million to build the joint-use facility. In

addition, Parkland will receive a portion of $800,000 earmarked for all eight

Regional Colleges, to help increase access to on-line training and services for

students in their home communities and to enhance access to learning resources

via technology.

"Developing shared educational and training facilities has proven to be a very

cost-effective, beneficial arrangement in this province," Parkland Regional

College CEO Fay Myers said. "There is the potential to share equipment, as

well as facilities, to better meet the program needs of students. We look

forward to developing this new space."

The money is from the Centenary Fund, announced in this year's budget to leave

a legacy of Saskatchewan's Centennial for future generations. Leading up to

the centennial celebrations in 2005, the Saskatchewan Government is funding

projects that support key infrastructure needs in the post-secondary education

and skills training sector.
