TWINNING WORK CONTINUES ON HIGHWAY 1 EAST

Released on August 18, 2000

Construction has started on 12.1 km of twinned lane for Highway 1 east near

Wolseley. Highway 1 is part of the National Highway System.

"This $2.4 million grading project began recently and is expected to be

completed by mid-June of next year," Highways and Transportation Minister

Maynard Sonntag said. "This project will create about 20 full-time jobs."

Procyk Brothers Transport Inc. of Montmartre was awarded the contract as the

lowest of six bidders. Construction work will include the building of a future

twinned lane adjacent to the existing lane along with service and access roads

in Wolseley.

Surfacing work will start under a separate contract in mid-summer of 2001 to

pave this 12.1 km of twinning plus the 21 km of twinned lane immediately to the

west. This twinned portion of Highway 1 east is expected to be open to the

public by fall of 2001.

"With each announced twinning project on Highway 1, we are working toward the

ultimate goal of twinning this part of the National Highway System from the

Alberta to the Manitoba border," Sonntag said.

Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different

highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the

largest in the department's history.

Traffic passing through this construction zone is asked to watch for trucks and

earthmovers crossing the highway.
