FIELD OF DREAMS FOR MELVILLE

Released on August 18, 2000

The two main baseball diamonds in Melville are being upgraded. Upgraded

facilities were the key to Melville securing the rights to host the midget

national baseball championships for the next three years.

The province is providing $256,000 from the Centenary Fund to improve the

dugouts, irrigation, spectator seating, lighting and the scoreboard. The City

of Melville will cover other capital costs, while corporate sponsors will pay

the costs of hosting the championships.

Melville MLA Ron Osika made the announcement on behalf of Municipal Affairs,

Culture and Housing Minister Jack Hillson.

"It is important communities have the appropriate facilities to be able to

host major sporting events," Osika said. "The national midget baseball

championships in Melville will help support our young athletes and boost

tourism in communities in the area."

The improvements to the ball diamonds in Melville will be complete in time for

the 2001 baseball season. The Canada Cup Midget National Baseball

Championships will be held in Melville, each summer, from 2001 to 2003.

The Centenary Fund, announced in this year's Provincial Budget, supports

capital projects that are of provincial or regional interest and develop

municipal infrastructure in preparation for Saskatchewan's Centennial

celebrations in 2005.
