The runway at the airport at Maple Creek will be repaired and resurfaced. The province is cost-sharing the project with the Town of Maple Creek. A
$35,000 grant from the Province's Centenary Fund has been provided toward the
$70,000 project.
The repairs are essential as the condition of the runway has put the airstrip
on the verge of being declared unfit to land planes.
"The Maple Creek airport serves an important role in public safety and to the
economy of southwest Saskatchewan," Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing
Minister Jack Hillson said. "The airport is used in emergencies by air
ambulance and the police as well as by companies in the oil and gas sector."
The resurfacing of the runway is expected to be complete this summer.
The Centenary Fund, announced in this year's Provincial Budget, supports
capital projects that are of provincial or regional interest and develop
municipal infrastructure in preparation for Saskatchewan's Centennial
celebrations in 2005.
