Grading on 10.3 km of Highway 909 south of Turnor Lake is set to begin thisweek.
"Work on this $1.2 million project is expected to be completed by late
October," Highways and Transportation Minister Maynard Sonntag said. "An
estimated 33 full-time workers will be employed on this project. Many of these
workers will be from northern communities."
Points North Construction Ltd. of La Ronge was awarded the contract as the
lowest of four bidders. The construction project will begin 19 km north of the
junction of Highway 155 and Highway 909 and continue to Turnor Lake. This
grading will complete the upgrading of Highway 909, which began in the fall of
1997.
Across the province, there will be 101 major projects on 53 different
highways. Highways and Transportation's 2000 budget is $250 million, the
largest in the department's history. In total, the province will spend $34.6
million this year to preserve, maintain and improve the condition of highways
and airports in Northern Saskatchewan.
"There is an important link between the transportation system in the north and
future economic development," Sonntag said. "By strengthening our northern
highway network, we will be creating more opportunities in the north."
Motorists are asked to drive safely through the Orange Zone and watch for
construction signs and equipment.
