The provincial government is providing $5.3 million over the next three yearsto the Yorkton Catholic School Division for the development of a separate high
school.
"Our government is investing in improved learning environments for our students
with a 20 per cent increase in capital funding over last year,"
Education Minister Jim Melenchuk said. "This project is important because we
are not only investing $5.3 million in students but also the community as a
whole."
The Yorkton project is one of approximately 115 school construction, renovation
or upgrading projects that will be funded this year for a total of $29.2
million.
The department's contribution for this project was based on the estimated cost
to renovate the former C.J. Houston facility. The Catholic school division
will determine whether to renovate the existing facility or to build a new high
school with the available funding.
The school will be designed to accommodate up to 450 grade nine to 12 students,
with an opening enrollment of 385. The department has also approved space for
30 grade seven and eight students for Practical and Applied Arts instruction on
a daily basis.
The high school is targeted to open in August, 2002.
"This project demonstrates the government's commitment to work with school
divisions to provide students with comfortable and well-equipped learning
facilities. We look forward to seeing this project progress," Melenchuk said.
Saskatchewan's Centenary fund provides $120 million over four years to support
important infrastructure projects in the lead up to the provincial centennial
in 2005.
