$50 MILLION FOREST FIRE SUPPRESSION CONTINGENCY FUND ANNOUNCED

Released on April 14, 2000

The provincial government today announced the establishment of a $50 million

contingency fund for fighting forest fires. The fund will supplement the

regular fire suppression budget of $28.78 million in the event of a severe fire

season.

"Recent experience has taught us that it is wise to be prepared for difficult

fire seasons," Environment and Resource Management Minister Buckley Belanger

said. "Our northern forests are valuable resources that must be protected.

This fund provides that protection."

Average annual fire suppression costs over the last 10 years has been

approximately $45 million and the 1995, 1998 and 1999 fire seasons have been

the three most costly in the history of the province.

Current predictions are that 2000 may be a severe fire season. The predictions

are based on low forest moisture levels as a result of three consecutively dry

years, low snow loads in the forest and the prospect of a warmer than normal

summer.
